The defaults of the port have been changed from WITH_MUTT_NCURSES to WITH_MUTT_SLANG to be in sync with the mail/mutt port. If you really have problems with slang (which should be a very rare case) be sure to have set COLORTERM=yes and COLORFGBG="color1;color2" in your environment, or recompile the port with the WITH_MUTT_NCURSES knob set (e.g. by adding WITH_MUTT_NCURSES=yes to your /etc/make.conf).
